OUR VISION–”YOU ARE THE APPLE OF GOD’S EYE”
Deuteronomy 32:10
When people think of apples in the context of the Bible we usually think of
Adams’ Apple and the fall of humanity from God’s grace when Adam and Eve were
tempted by the devil and ate the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3).
However, there is another picture of the apple that shows God’s amazing love for us
in the Song of Moses found in Deuteronomy Chapter 32. In this Bible passage we see God
finding Jacob (who represents Israel, God’s chosen people) wandering in a desert. Verse
10 says that God found him, shielded him, cared for him, guarded him and kept him as
“the Apple of His eye”.
To be the “Apple of God’s eye” means that God sees in each of us a reflection of the
creator. We are very special to God! We are precious in God’s sight. We are a gift
to God, beautiful to God and worthy of being loved by God. We at Sparta U. M. Church
see ourselves like Jacob, having been lost in the world in need of a savior. Yet in
some mysterious and amazing way God found us, picked us up, polished off our dirt and
grime, healed our hurts and bruises and gave us new life in Jesus and keeps us as the
“Apple of His eye”. Then God sends us out into the community to seek others who have
been dropped and bruised by life and forgotten about. We pick them up and treat them as
God has treated us, loved and cared for as the Apple of God’s eye.
